Air Pacific
doubles fleet size to Fiji
Air Pacific is planning
to spend almost $1 billion to buy three B787-9 Dreamliners,
powered by GE GEnX engines, for delivery in 2016 and 2017.
This is the biggest business transaction in the history of
Fiji.
These are in addition to the five B787-9 Dreamliners
purchased by Air Pacific for delivery in 2011 and 2012.
The aircraft have a list price of FJ$927 million (US$580m).
This brings the total fleet order to F$2.4 billion, the
largest transaction ever undertaken by a Fiji company.
Last week, media reports quoted Air Pacific as saying that
it was facing 15-20 month delay in getting its new Boeing
787 Dreamliners.
Campbell was quoted as saying said the Fiji carrier was in
talks about extending leases on its Boeing 747 and 767
wide-body airliners to ensure adequate capacity.
Boeing earlier announced that there would be delays in
deliveries of its new airliner because of manufacturing and
certification issues. (2008/04/30)

Pacific Blue
increases flights to Fiji
Pacific Blue Airlines, Virgin Blue’s international carrier,
will increase its flights from Australia to Fiji from June
this year with the introduction of two new services.
The
additions will now increase Virgin Blue’s 20 non-stop
flights to and from Sydney and Brisbane to 24 flights a week
from June 17, 2008.
Stefan
Pichler, the chief commercial officer of Virgin Blue,
Australia’s second biggest airline, who announced this in a
press meet today afternoon, attributed the growth to
increasing demand for flights to Fiji by Australian holiday
makers.
He
revealed recent provisional statistics that showed Fiji was
in the midst of a tourism “sweet spot” for Aussie travelers.
The
executives of Virgin Blue are currently in the country
holding meetings with key stakeholders of the aviation
industry to discuss Pacific Blue’s growth plans for the
country.
Pichler
says the decision to boost services follows the ongoing and
steady demand for Fiji flights, with strong growth
experienced for direct flights from Sydney to Brisbane. It
was also revealed that the number of Australian residents
traveling to Fiji had increased by 23.4 per cent.
He said
since Pacific Blue launched flights in September 2004 to
March this year, the airline has delivered some 161,000
Australian tourists to Fiji, equivalent to the injection of
over $252 million in the local economy.
He also
admitted Fiji was presently a major destination for Virgin
Blue’s operations highlighting a strong performance in
passenger market growth.
“The
Brisbane-Fiji passenger market has grown by 66,684
passengers or 82 per cent since Pacific Blue’s entry on this
route,” Pichler said.
“The
Sydney-Fiji passenger market has grown by 59,143 passengers
(26 per cent).”
It is
these statistics that Pacific Blue said boosted its
confidence to add two weekly services from Brisbane to Fiji
on Tuesdays and Saturdays from June 17 this year, taking it
to a daily flight frequency.
Interim
Tourism Minister Tom Ricketts said Fiji remained a
developing nation with an important tourism sector heavily
dependent on air services to bring visitors to and carry
them within islands of the destination.
“There are
also new opportunities for encouraging new carriers while
ensuring the ongoing viability and growth of its national
carrier. The latter is one that should be supported and
encouraged as it contributes to the nation interest in
growing tourism arrivals from traditional and new markets to
reap the economic benefit,” he said. (2008/04/17)

Australian tourists break arrival records in Fiji
According to the cooperative efforts made by the Fiji
Islands Visitors Bureau and its marketing partners, Fiji has
become the latest hot-spot holiday destination for
Australian tourists showing a strong rise in Australian
visitors in its first quarter.
The Bureau’s regional director, Australia, Paresh Pant, said
he was pleased with the substantial results of the first
quarter 2008 and he was confident of achieving an arrivals
target of 209,000 for the calendar year.
“Late last year, when we were confident we would achieve
more than 198,000 Australian visitors for the 2007 calendar
year, we initiated meetings with some of our traditional
partners and agreed on a broad three-year cooperative plan
which could be achieved despite limited resources,” he said.
“The achievements to date are the early results of that.”
In January this year the arrival of 19,121 Australians was
a 35 per cent improvement on the same month last year and
February arrivals of 13,123 was an improvement of about 48
per cent. Australian visitor arrivals had been setting
monthly records since September 2007, Mr Pant said.
In addition to Fiji’s traditional holiday target market
from Australia, Mr Pant said the Bureau was aggressively
targeting the meetings, incentives and conferences sector
(MICE) with the expectation of increasing last year’s total
large groups business – of which MICE was a significant
component – of about 11,000 to about 18,000 visitors
Mr Pant
confirmed two major retail travel conferences for 2008, both
scheduled for August, which would see about 1,000 travel
agents in Fiji, further endorsing the destination’s
reputation of relaxation and security. (2008/04/04)
